The North East Land, Sea and Air Museum (NELSAM), just off Washington Road on the old RAF Usworth site, is one of the area’s hidden gems. Run by dedicated volunteers, it celebrates the North East’s proud transport and military heritage with an impressive collection of aircraft, military vehicles, and vintage engines. Locals will instantly recognise the iconic Vulcan bomber on display, along with a Lightning jet and several helicopters that once filled the skies above Tyne and Wear. The museum also includes old fire engines, trams, and exhibits that bring the region’s industrial past to life. Whether you grew up hearing jets roar overhead or you're discovering it for the first time, NELSAM offers a hands-on, nostalgic day out that captures the spirit of Sunderland’s aviation roots.
