During the mid-20th century, Usworth became part of the wider Washington New Town development, which brought modern housing estates, schools, and road systems to the area. Despite these changes, Usworth managed to keep its local charm and strong community feel. Many long-standing families still live in the area, and there’s a strong sense of pride in its working-class roots and shared history.
The village is also known for being the original site of RAF Usworth, which later became Sunderland Airport before the site was redeveloped to house the Nissan car plant—one of the region’s biggest employers today. Usworth continues to grow and adapt, balancing its deep-rooted past with the needs of a modern community.
