The area of Washington has strong connections to football culture across the North East, with the main affiliation being to Sunderland A.F.C. Originally founded as the Sunderland & District Teachers Association Football Club in 1879, the team has grown into one of the most historic and passionately supported clubs in England. The vast majority of people in Washington identify as part of the Mackem culture—proud supporters of Sunderland, often travelling to the Stadium of Light on match days and deeply involved in the club's ups and downs. Football is more than just a sport in the area; it’s a key part of the community identity. However, a smaller portion of Washington residents support Newcastle United, Sunderland’s fierce rivals.
